Year 6 Bell-boating

Year 6 enjoyed a fabulous afternoon bell-boating at the Herts Young Mariners Base. Great team building and a fantastic well-being session. The children were divided into three teams and the session culminated in a race back to base. The girls just pipped the boys to the finish, but a great time was had by all!

In science, Year 6 are exploring the topic: Light. They have been examining how shadows are made, as well as devising their own investigations to discover the variety of ways that shadows can be manipulated. We discovered that there is a variety of ways to achieve this. We also discovered that we have some talented shadow puppeteers!

In P.E. this half term Year 6 are enjoying learning haka dancing. Traditionally, the Māori people of New Zealand performed haka to display a tribe’s strength, pride and unity. The haka is commonly known as a war dance used to fire up warriors on the battlefield, but it's also a customary way to celebrate, entertain, welcome, and challenge visiting tribes. Today we are also familiar with sports teams performing the haka at sporting events, most noticeably the rugby. The children a participating with enthusiasm and it is lovely to see everyone enjoying themselves!

Year 6 – Electricity

In science this half term, Year 6 are returning to the topic of Electricity. They were able to recall lots of learning from Year 4 – a great start! After recapping our knowledge of electrical symbols, they were challenged to create specific circuits using a variety of components such as cells, switches and bulbs. They observed the affect on the circuit when additional components were added. They showed great perseverance and determination to make their circuits work.

Year 6 Skateboarding

Year 6 enjoyed their second skateboarding session this academic year. Unfortunately, the icy weather forced us inside but a good time was still had by all. The children worked well to improve and build upon their existing skills. It is great to see their confidence growing as well as their ability.

Year 6 Jolly Jumper

Uniqueness was the theme of the day, as Year 6 made the most of their last ever Jolly Jumper Day at Andrews Lane, with a bumper round of Christmas crafts. It began with painting using watercolours to create Christmas cards for their families, stunningly simple and each different from the next. They then learned how to create 3D snowflakes – this was a trial of patience  for some because they are quite intricate. Look out for examples on the Year 6 display in the dining hall at the Christmas Bazar. Well done Year 6 amazing peserverance! Mr Maddock joined the festivities, to take small groups of children to learn the art of batik, with some beautiful results that the  children will be sharing with you in the near future.

Y6 DT

Year 6 began their highly anticipated DT topic, Gingerbread Houses, this week. We began by examining existing gingerbread houses designs – which were better both structurally and aesthetically. The children then began the design process for their own gingerbread houses. Next week we will be testing and improving our designs, using cardboard templates before the fun of baking and decorating begins.

Year 6 Wire People Sculptures

This week Year 6 completed their first art topic, Wire People, by producing magnificent wire sculptures that are made from a single piece of wire. It was significantly more challenging than they expected, but they showed great resilience and perseverance in completing them. They are now proudly on display outside the Year 6 classroom.

Year 6 RE

As part of our topic Justice and Freedom, Year 6 have been learning about the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child. This was first drafted in 1923 by a British woman, Eglantyne Jebb and adopted by the League of Nations in 1924. The children worked in small groups to debate which of the 54 articles were most important, selecting their top 9. Not an easy task! We also learned about Universal Children’s Day (November 20th)  which celebrates the promotion of child welfare and togetherness across the globe.

Year 6 – Forest School

Year 6’s penultimate Forest School session took on a decidedly autumnal feel, as the children opted for a Halloween theme. The children were creative in their endeavours, decorating the woods with spooky spiders, face painting and carving clay pumpkins. They finished the session with a campfire, over which they cooked noodles, topped with a variety of fresh vegetables.

Year 6 Science

In science this half term, Year 6 have been learning about classifying organisms. As part of this topic they have learnt about micro-organisms, such as bacteria, viruses and fungi. We investigated the environments that allow these micro-organisms to thrive. If you have a strong stomach, you are invited to pop in to Year 6 and see what is growing!

Year 6 Working with Parents

Thank you to all of the parents that attended our first Working with Parents session of the year. Our focus for this session was spellings. Supporting your children to learn their weekly spellings is invaluable. It helps them to use words accurately in heir own writing, which not only improves writing but elevates their confidence. In addition, it aids their comprehension skills, allowing them to have better understanding of what they are reading. Keep practising Year 6!

Year 6 Smoothies

Year 6 had a unique opportunity to put pedal power to good use this week. We were visited by the ladies of Herts Catering Limited for a smoothie workshop to educate us all in the importance of eating breakfast before school. Using the analogy of  ‘you can’t drive a clar without petrol’  they reminded us that it is essential that we fuel ourselves, ready for a day of learning. The children made smoothies that were blended by pedal power. They made three varieties: apple juice with mixed berries, apple juice with mango and oat milk (fantastic for slow-release energy) with blueberries and banana. A top tip from HCL is to use frozen fruit, it’s cheaper, perfect to adapt for portion sizes and with no mess or waste. All the children had the opportunity to taste the efforts of their labour too!

Thank you HCL!
